FAIR TRADE CHOCOLATE BAR
PACKAGING

DESIGN BRIEF
The goal of this project was to design and construct the packaging for a chocolate bar inspired by an assigned country. My assigned country was Peru. I studied the colors, culture, landscapes, patterns, and more to build a design toolkit. Using this research, I incorporated elements that reflected fair trade and organic concepts. The focus of the project was to create an effective brand system by balancing typography, color, and illustration, while also printing and constructing a final tangible product.
The final design submission was required to include:

-
Fair trade and organic logos, sized and placed in proper locations
-
Nutrition information
-
A description or story about the country of origin
-
An actual chocolate bar
-
Three different flavors related to the country of origin
-
Country of origin labeling (e.g., “Made in Ivory Coast” or “Cocoa imported from Ivory Coast”), displayed on the front
-
The chocolate’s weight (e.g., NET WT. 3.5 oz [100 g]) on the front
-
Space for the barcode

RESEARCH + EXPLORATION

We were tasked with designing a fair trade chocolate bar inspired by an assigned country. My country was Peru, and through this project I learned a lot about its culture and what chocolate means to the people there. As one of the main origins of the cacao plant, Peru is known for producing chocolate that is both delicious and healthy. Cacao is considered one of the many Peruvian superfoods, with its greatest benefits found in its raw form. Whether as whole cacao or cacao powder, it provides many nutritional advantages. With this in mind, I based my design on pure chocolate, making the cacao percentage the central highlight.
The patterns along the sides of the packaging were inspired by traditional Peruvian dresses and celebrations, while the choice of paper was meant to create a more organic look and feel.
This was a new experience for me, not only designing but also constructing a final product. I learned a lot about the printing process as well as the hands-on building aspect. Time management played a significant role throughout the project, and it was something I had to improve and figure out along the way.
